Armstrong Sentencing Update

Updated: Mar 21

Tim Armstrong was sentenced to probation and time served and is required to register as a sex offender; the sentence was issued on March 16, 2026. The community immediately burst into outrage at the lack of jail time for Armstrong who had once served as a School Resource Officer and Mayor and used his position to prey on young children. While accusations have circulated since Armstrong was in his early 20's working at Shawe and later terminated, the discussion heated up when a local citizen went public after Armstrong had been elected mayor. The adult man alleged Armstrong was a serial rapist and abuser of many children-him included. He offered clear details of the attacks and remained open with the public despite assaults on his character and rampant victim blaming. Various community leaders denied the accusations and vehemently protected Armstrong. Armstrong was successful in defusing the public concerns by alleging this accuser was "just angry because (I) he didn't appoint him to a position in his new mayoral staff." Additionally, several key Armstrong supporters- Sheriff John Wallace and officer Yancy Denning stood firm in support of their friend Armstrong.

It is because of the support from Wallace, Denning and current Sheriff Flint, that outrage continues to build. There is clear public disdain, not just for Armstrong, but for those who protected and supported him for more than 4 decades during which time, multiple victims were harmed.

The failure of law enforcement, schools, prosecutors and judges to assure proper charges and sentencing are fueling anger with "the system" and elected officials involved in the Armstrong case. Frustrations are driving public comment on local news and gossip pages because of Armstrong's law enforcement service and connections.

Armstrong was a City of Madison Police officer with a close personal connection to Police Chief John Wallace. Wallace and Armstrong were inseparable and the two had a long-time friendship. So close that accusations emerged during Armstrongs arrest that Wallace "had known all along". Prior to Armstrong's arrest, Wallace was elected sheriff and appointed an unqualified Armstrong as a "special detective" after Armstrong lost the race for Mayor. Wallace, a republican, was instrumental in moving Armstrong and Denning (both democrats) into school resource officer positions. Denning aggressively defended Armstrong and attacked his accusers as cruel and "lacking evidence". He often posted on social media "anonymously" with harsh comments against victims in attempts to demonstrate loyalty to Armstrong. Sheriff Ben Flint's ties to Wallace and Armstrong are well known but it is the close connection to Yancy Denning that as has resulted in the publics outcry against what many call "Armstrong's three pre*verted musketeers". Fair or not- Flint, Denning and Wallace are all viewed as guilty of helping Armstrong avoid arrest and ultimately "get off scott-free".

Aggravating the situation is Armstrong's self-professed cancer diagnosis. It may or may not be true but the court none the less may have considered not jailing a prisoner that would require expensive medical care. That issue compounded with the fact Armstrong would be prey for prisoners seeking to inflict justice on child molesters and Armstrong's law enforcement background would have made him a prime target of fellow inmates. It should be noted that the public carefully observed Armstrong's normal weight, usual hair and skin conditions and came to the conclusion that he "didn't look like he was dying." Regardless, of any diagnosis, the majority of the community have expanded their outrage to include those who protected Armstrong and allowed him to go unpunished. The "three musketeers" apparently failed to learn their lesson from protecting a child predator and, have now, once again, circled wagons and are protecting Flint in his primary challenge against Mike Sims who narrowly lost in a three-way race to Flint four years ago. Oddly it is Flint supporters who accuse Sims of an inappropriate friendship with a disgraced-discharged city officer. However, that officer was never suspected of, arrested for, or charged in a child predator case. Apparently the "musketeers" have decided that protecting a child predator is no problem and should in fact be rewarded with a second term as sheriff. And while social media warriors continue to disagree- it will be primary voters who actually decide which candidate has the worse friend or if that issue even matters.
